Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an endemic mosquito-transmitted viral disease in children with varying hematological manifestations that has spread rapidly in recent years. This study aims to analyze the influence of primary and secondary infections in pediatric DHF patients and evaluate laboratory parameter distributions for optimal management strategies.

An observational analytic case-control design was employed using 70 DHF patient samples from medical records at Inche Abdoel Moeis Hospital Samarinda. Data collected included demographic characteristics, hematological parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, leukocytes), infection type, and hospitalization length. Univariate analysis described sample distribution and characteristics, while bivariate analysis included normality tests and paired t-tests.

Results demonstrated significant differences in platelet counts between primary and secondary infections (p-value <0.000), indicating platelet counts significantly affect primary and secondary dengue fever patients. Given this study's limitation to platelet count data, future research should expand collection scope to include thrombopoietin level measurements, platelet morphology studies, and Platelet Index Descriptions.
